Isabelle

Isabelle broke into a sweat as she rode her bicycle through the shadowy streets of Paris. It was well past curfew and a risk to be out at such a late hour. But what else could she do?

She’d acted on instinct, grabbing a bicycle and pursuing Marina, but now an unfamiliar fear shot through her. Was she being brave, or foolish?

As Isabelle kept to the shadows, hiding from the Nazi patrol cars, her mind raced. What would she do now that her worst suspicions had been confirmed? What else had Marina stolen? To whom was she delivering the stolen artwork? Isabelle felt a knot form in her stomach as she cycled through the night, desperately seeking answers.

As Lohse turned down a side street, Isabelle pulled her bike to a stop, gasping for air. Peering out from the shadows, she watched in horror as Lohse and Marina unloaded the crate of valuable art into another warehouse. She felt a pang of sadness and anger as she thought of all the hard work she had put in to protecting these pieces of art and now this. She knew that she had to do something before they could get away with what they were doing.

She quickly ran towards the entrance of the warehouse. Fortunately, the door was not locked, so Isabelle easily slipped through it without being detected. Once inside, she slowly made her way through the darkness towards Marina and Lohse, who were preoccupied with their task. She knew she couldn’t just take the art back. She would need a plan. ‘There’s always someone in the black market interested,’ Lohse replied. ‘We’ll keep it here for a while to make sure nobody notices its absence from the gallery, then I’ll get in touch with some of my contacts in Paris and sell it on.’

‘And how will we be paid?’ Marina queried, her tone hinting at suspicion.

Lohse moved towards her and lightly kissed her lips. ‘Leave that to me; I’ll take care of everything and get what we deserve.’ He gave her a smirk as he finished speaking.

Isabelle was not convinced by his words and nor was Marina, who seemed just as doubtful, judging from the expression on her face.

Hearing enough, Isabelle quickly slipped out of the warehouse and retrieved the bicycle. She pedalled as fast as she could through the cold, dark streets, eerily quiet because of the curfew.

She was not too far from home when she heard the sound of some activity in front of her down the street. Raised voices and people screaming. Isabelle recognized the sound of a Nazi raid.

She pedalled desperately, pushing her bike to its limits. But the sound of Nazi patrol cars seemed to get ever closer. As the road curved back into town, there was an alleyway that cut through to the other side. As the headlight of a Nazi patrol swung around the corner, she darted into the blackness between
